[...] The reason this is important is because Twitter has said that they would use search to introduce businesses to people. This is exactly what I wrote a week ago and mocked up a few different versions of what it might look like here. [...]

Lou & other commenter's,
Great points. I was just trying to expose the low hanging fruit for on site advertising. I am in agreement that the stream must be monetized thru the API and surrounding services that access the social river of data that flows thru it.

Additionally. There are opportunities for Twitter to revenue share with developers to actually encourage developers to build services that would facilitate monetization based upon some key data sets and algorithms. Most Twitter apps make little/no money so asking developers to pay won't work at this time. All in good time.

I agree with Lou about the app network. One way Twitter can monetise that is by a subscription system to increase the number of API calls.

I agree with Lou. It's going to be about the app network.
In the future, the usefulness of the twitter website will decrease as the number of applications that do exactly as you described above increase. Off the top of my head @mytweet is a good example of suggested followers.

All viable ideas. Their strategy must include the network of applications built upon the Twitter platform. This means it has to monetize either the access or the data stream as well. That is where a lot of their traffic and IO comes from. The ideas outlined all work at the destination site level but it seems the app network is the nut that has to be cracked.

why can't brands use one of its mascots, mythical/fictional characters as a tweet account and ask the readers to follow it.

Search is really the most valuable thing for advertisers because it shows direct intent by the user to find something. And search is also the least intrusive form of advertising for the end user. So that being said, I believe monetizing Twitter search is really the most important thing they can do to to generate revenue in the near future.

Hopefully Twitter is listening.

Mike, Thanks for the comments. Actually the smart advertisers will not use tweets as advertisements; rather as a way to engage. They could use advertising simply to gain audience (reach) That would be the smart behavior. Thus eliminating the need to be filtered out. They still need to add value.
